Personal Philosophy Paper Assignment
Technology has become a vital part of
education in recent years. Everything educators use as a tool should be for the
betterment of the student. Its purpose is to enhance the learning experience of
the student. Because of the recent turn to online learning, technology has been
forced even more into the education system. Students have access to education wherever
and whenever due to online learning. Because of that technology has been
labeled as an essential and critical tool (Lai et al., 2022). Because of Covid-19,
the classroom will never be the same. Teachers were forced quickly to integrate
technology. Now, whether good or bad technology is here to stay (King, 2022). “The
changes in learning patterns are required to perform the update following the dynamics
of the changing times of increasingly rapid developments triggered by
technology” (Sudarsana, 2019).
There
are positives to having technology in the classroom to help students learn.
Students are surrounded by technology daily so it would seem reasonable to
incorporate technology that they know into their learning process. Changes in
learning patterns are a must with changes in technology. Education is extremely
important for knowledge, and it must utilize technology that is rapidly
changing (Sudarsana, 2019).
Incorporating
technology into the classroom is neither moral nor immoral. However, we have
been given technology and because of that, we should be good stewards of what
we have been given. God created Earth and we are to look after it and take care
of it. We are stewards of His creation. It says in I Peter 4:10, “Each of you
should use whatever gift you have received to serve others, as faithful
stewards of God’s grace in its various forms” (Bible Verses About
Stewardship - Stewards of His Creation in Scripture, n.d.). A second biblical
defense of technology is that we are called to discernment. The Bible is the
source for discernment. We should look to God for wisdom and insight. We see
this in scripture through 1 Corinthians 2:14. “The natural person does not
accept the things of the Spirit of God, for they are folly to him, and he is
not able to understand them because they are spiritually discerned” (GotQuestions.org,
2022). We can use the Holy Spirit to
help us discern what is right in our daily lives and in our classrooms. The
third biblical defense of technology is knowledge. Using our brains to learn
more about knowledge will change the trajectory of our classrooms. When we take
the time to learn new skills and technology, we are able to incorporate it and
our students have the opportunity to learn more (King, 2022). 2 Timothy 3:7
says, Ever learning, and never able to come to the knowledge of the truth” (2
Timothy 3:7 (NIV), n.d.).
As
I have been in the classroom for three years, each year I have tried to
incorporate new technology into learning and lessons. Our school provides
laptops for our students, and we use those almost daily in College 103. I bought
my own smart board, and it has created many more opportunities for learning. I’m
able to use it for simple PowerPoint presentations but also to have videos for
further teaching. Students use their laptops or phones to play interactive
games like Blookit and Kahoot. Using technology has helped with discipline as
well. I use an online form when I need to make contact with parents to keep
records.
